Chubby Chicken at Katipunan, Quezon City

Truth be told, rarely do I find myself, perusing the list of restaurants in Katipunan area to visit. I realized I have to work on that. Being introduced to Chubby Chicken in Katipunan, Quezon City recently was a good way to kick start this somewhat new food blogging ~~responsibility~~ goal. It was a good start yes. Not only Chubby Chicken offers good grubs, they are affordable as well.

Aptly located near universities in Katipunan, Chubby Chicken mainly caters to students with their hefty servings and affordable prices. But no one says that yuppies and those who are kid at heart aren't welcome. This little, albeit impressive spot for good chicken which started in some food bazaars aims to serve people from all walks of life. While Chubby Chicken's soy-glazed chicken has the spotlight, other items on their menu are also well worth your moolah, not to mention, your calorie count.

The location isn't really hard to find, having Mc.Donalds Katipunan as its landmark. Chubby Chicken is just right behind it. It isn't as spacious as I had hoped but it does possessed the charm of the usual students' hang out joint. I went there on a Sunday and it was surprising to see impressive numbers of customers. Even without school, Chubby Chicken is thriving on a what supposedly a not so busy days in its operation. It is a good sign, if I do say so myself.

Chubby Chicken (Php80/1pc, Php120/2pc) boasts of crisp soy-glazed skin that serves as a foil for an equally tasty meat. The flavor is something to be happy about while the screaming tenderness in texture is an additional treat. The garlic sauce maybe an unlikely combination for something already smothered with sauce. But eating with an open mind merits a price. The additional kick of the creamy sauce is definitely a step forward.

For some who refuse to be bothered by chicken bones, Chubby Chicken's Chicken Strips (Php130/with rice, Php145/with fries) can be a good option. That is if you're up for a spunky taste of beer that is incorporated on its batter. One must be careful though as the succulent meat coupled with the distinct taste of the beer batter can be highly addictive.

Chubby Chicken's menu may be chicken-centered yet, it does not discount the fact that there are other non-chicken dish diners may enjoy as well. Take for instance their Chubby Salpicao (Php165) made with Australian beef. Generous serving of tender beef with fried egg on the side, this all-day breakfast fare is also a sure winner.

One may take a somewhat healthier route at Chubby Chicken through their Chubby Fish Tacos (Php80/1pc, Php125/2pc). Battered strips of fish fillets on a soft tortilla wrap, garnished with shredded lettuce, garlic cream dressing, and generous cheddar cheese. Served with fried on the side, this dish holds a glory on its own as the taste and the serving portion is not overshadowed by the other chubby items on the menu.

Bolognese Pasta (Php105) on the other hand can be a great addition to your feast, especially when you are up for carbo loading. Its taste suits Filipino palate well as it possess the proverbial sweet savory concoction of flavors, made all the more filling with minced meat.

Chubby Oreos (Php95) may be your typical deep-fried Oreo dessert, but what separate this from the usual fare is the choices of ice cream it can be topped with. Depending on the availability, one can have cookies and cream or rocky road ice cream to go with the fried cookies.

Imported goodies are also available at Chubby Chicken. Enticing packs of had to find sodas as well as packages of imported chocolates and other goodies sit on the counter for diner's easy access. While I had a great time with my Chubby Oreos, sealing the meal with a box of Kit-Kat Sakura Matcha was just perfect.

Despite the fact that there are a lot of restaurants that offers chicken, particularly the fried and flavored variant, it is surprising to know that there are still some new players that could pull it off and impress diners to the core. Chubby Chicken may look unassumingly simple from the get go but little did I know that they are one of those which ended up on my favorite list.
