The timing couldn’t be more apt. I was browsing for an easy almond butter recipe when a proposal to try Juggernut Premium Almond and Cashew Spreads came. For a while I have been searching for a good and healthy alternative to peanut butter because truth be told, I am not big on peanut butter.
There, I said it. I am not big on peanut butter.
I find it quite amusing sometimes that whenever I drop this statement, some people would look at me as if I just told them matter-of-factly that I’m a vegan – they refuse to believe me. All. The. Freaking. Time.
It may have something to do with my appearance suggestive of a person who smears peanut butter on everything she gobbles down. Or it could be because peanut butter is one of those ultimate food for foodies so perfect just like bacon it warrants its own religion. Regardless that the former reasoning weighs heavily, the truth is, I always choose almond or cashew butter over peanut butter in a heartbeat.
Sad thing is that my preference for spread given the mentioned options isn’t really easy to come by. While I have not mastered the art of making almond butter from scratch, I have to get by with the ones I can buy in the market.
Juggernut Premium Almond and Cashew Spreads is a product of a start-up business under the School of Management Business Accelerator Program of the Ateneo de Manila University. It started May of 2014 spearheaded by four graduating students of ADMU under the program as the proprietors.
The proprietors named their product Juggernut with the desire to live up to its definition “a powerful force.” Also named after a comic book character, they aim to let their customers take a trip down the memory lane of their childhood as they savor the goodness of their spreads.
Melissa Doctor, one of the proprietors informed me that Juggernut’s formulation is made through a series of taste tests until they have boiled down into four different flavors they now have; Classic Almond Butter, White Chocolate Almond Butter, Classic Cashew Butter, and White Chocolate Cashew Butter.
Not to be mistaken as yet another brand of peanut butter in the market, Juggernut holds the promise of a healthy alternative, not to mention more affordable. Aside from the fact that almonds and cashews are way healthier than peanuts, Juggernut’s variants are all natural and gluten free.
The absence of preservatives and emulsifiers leads to a spread that naturally separates from the oil. The trick is to mix it all well then you’re good to go. Among the four variants, I developed a deep liking for the Classic variant. It’s neither too sweet nor bland, you can really taste the almonds and cashews they used in coming up with such amazing spread. The White Chocolate variant is perfect for those who have sweet tooth, but then again, its sweetness will not overwhelm you.
I love spreading Juggernut on warm bread or on freshly made pancakes. Since it is not too sweet, I sometimes allow myself the liberty of enjoying a spoonful of or two of it, eaten as it is, accompanied by just a warm glass of milk.
If you have a thing for almond cashew butter like I do, or if you simply want to have a healthy alternative to your usual peanut butter then, Juggernut Premium Almond and Cashew Spreads may be for you. They accept orders through their Facebook page or you may just call them. Deliveries are possible for a minimal fee or you can also meet them up in Katipunan area in Quezon City.
