This year, I had my first birthday without my mother. It hasn't been a year since she passed away. Hence, celebrating my birthday was the farthest thing in my mind. Normally, there would be cakes, ice cream, and spaghetti or pancit for long life. None of them appeared on the table at home this year.
Instead, my father decided to at least we eat out, share a simple meal and a prayer of gratitude for another year in his daughter's life.
I don't want for this blog post to sound somber, because did a great job of choosing Nono's Comfort Kitchen. A restaurant that serves comfort food, I must say that we were given a service that's heartwarming and food that's satisfying.
They have wide variety of food selection their menu feels like a book filled with delightful stories. There's a lot of food to try but it is impossible to accomplish such feat in one go. What I can say is that my first time with them, were filled with dishes that makes me look forward to my next visit.
First on the table was an appetizer fit for someone who shares the same affinity with cheese and truffle - Nono's Fried Cheese Truffle Wontons (Php195). I love the generous mozzarella and cheddar cheese filling which made ll the more satisfying by the contrasting flavor of honey and truffle oil.
Then there's Truffle Cream Pasta (Php425 solo, Php825 big plate) which my father really loved despite the fact that he's not a big fan of cream-based pasta dishes. We love the generous amount of freshly grated parmesan cheese and a perfect amount of truffle oil that did not assault the senses.
We also had the Pan Roasted Fish with Spaghettini Aglio Olio (Php625 solo, Php1,195 big plate) that my nephew favored over other dishese we feasted on that visit. They used Hake fish which was perfectly seasoned. The Aglio Olio on the side was equally flavorful which makes the entire meal a perfect combination.
The pan-roasted Hake fish was delightful but the Salmon Hollandaise (Php625 solo, Php1,195 big plate) was just pure perfection. The creaminess of the hollandaise and the perfectly seasoned flaky salmon was a match made in heaven. I will order this again for sure.
I am trying my best to dodge pork and beef these days, but I still haven't decided if I can the same thing for chicken. Which is a good thing because I was able to try Nono's Homestyle Fried Chicken (Php395 solo, Php775 big plate). This meal is basically crispy boneless chicken fillet with country-style gravy and honey. It comes with brioche buns, corn on a cob, and your choice of potato chips, French fries, or rice. It was suggested that it is best enjoyed when you fip your chicken into the gravy and then honey - I couldn't agree more.
We were only three - my father, my nephew, and myself. We were full at this rate we decided to just grab a coffee and hot choco from the menu.
Their Hot Choco (Php155) was good, and so was the Flat White (Php135).
