Sandy's Pizza

Every time I pass by A. Mabini St. in San Juan, there never was a time when the billboard showing a very inviting photo of a pizza along with a tag line “Beautiful people crave Sandy’s Pizza” did not catch my attention. Where on earth this Sandy’s Pizza is and why on earth am I not craving for it? I panicked. Well, I’m just kidding. I did not panic but I tried to locate their store because I felt that this pizza might be something special. And I was right

Sandy’s Pizza has variety of interesting flavors, from Thai Chicken, Mexican Chili, Indian Chicken Curry, to Tocino Pizza, and more. Since I want to taste different varieties in one go, my friend Ceej and I ordered for their Sampler Pizza and got to try four different flavors the first time we visit their store in Little Baguio, San Juan. We opted for White Pizza, Meatzarella, Garlic Chorizo with Cheese, and Filipino Adobo with Kesong Puti.

White Pizza may be common but Sandy’s is distinctly flavorful. Kesong Puti I must say made all the difference as it endears it to my palate.

Meatzarella is all meat. One thing I noticed was that, it may not look like they are generous with the meat, but once you tasted it; you must prepare yourself for the orchestration of meaty flavor that will burst into your mouth. A balanced was definitely struck for that matter.

Garlic Chorizo with Cheese is poetically simple yet, it will leave a mark on your palate that will make you crave for more.

Filipino Adobo with Kesong Puti was my favorite. The name itself is definitely a dead giveaway that anyone will surely love it.

Since I am not a fan of thick crust pizza, its New York Style crust is perfect. It is soft and chewy on the inside, light and crispy on the outside.

Aside from their pizza, I was able to try their Creamy Basil Pesto. And just like Nigella Lawson, I love it when my pasta is soaking in its sauce that is why I appreciate their generous servings of it, not to mention that it taste really good.

Being served with good food is one thing, but being served graciously with good food is another. I must say that their servers are really good with customer service. They are all accommodating, friendly, and sincere with the service that they are giving their customers.

After dining at Sandy’s Pizza, now I know why beautiful people crave for it.

Going Back to Basic with Conti's New York Cheesecake

Cheesecakes, notwithstanding my calories concern have always been in my foodie lists of heaven on earth. Who could ever resist the temptation of having the luxurious taste of rich creaminess and velvety texture of cream cheese as it languorously slipped through your tongue? Definitely, not me.

Being blessed with a sweet tooth, I grew up opening immersing myself to the wondrous world of cheesecakes. Italian, Chicago, Greek, Chocolate and Fruits variants, the lists are endless. Just now, I realized that for the past two weeks, I have eaten 12 variants of cheesecakes. A dozen different variants in 14 days, imagine that! It was a delicious death, but who’s complaining? I’m still alive anyway. (And working my butt off for that matter).

Having indulged myself in that unusual ritual, in my heart, I always believe that in between venturing to different twists of cheesecake variants, there will always be a time, when I would crave for the most basic, New York Cheesecake. And during this time, I always find myself heading to Conti’s Bakeshop. The same shop which got me raving about their Cheese Puff has amazed me once again with their cheese creation.

As a cheesecake aficionado, I only patronize cheesecakes that use 100% cream cheese. While I respect bakers who uses unflavored gelatin to hold the thing altogether, or to cut cost, or both, I still believe that if you are going to indulge, might as well get the best thing you can have. The thing with New York Cheesecake is its timeless simplicity with subtle orchestration of different texture made sublime by pure and minimalist taste of tangy and sweet. I must say that Conti’s New York Cheesecake fits to this description well.

I love how Conti’s version does not yield of gelatinous type I get with other bakeshops. Stripped to its bare essence, its version is so divine in its adherence to simplicity and richness of flavor. Every microscopic morsel screams “cheese!” Not to mention the crunchiness of the crust that liven things up.

Cheesecake is one dessert that land itself to a whole world of variations. If you’re the adventurous type, you will never run out of new variants to try. Once you feel the need to take a break from the feast of flavors, we can always go back to the comfort of having just the basic.

KFC Cheesy Bacon Twister

Who doesn’t love bacon? In my years of being a foodie, I have not met anyone who has a huge will power to resist such a delightful temptation. I mean, it’s bacon, and I for one am a big fan. I know it is one of the reasons why I can never be a vegan. When KFC introduces its Limited Edition Cheesy Bacon Twister, I know, it should not be missed.

Just like their previous flavors of Twister, KFC Cheesy Bacon Twister is dream come true for foodies whose undying craving for KFC Chicken is as big as life itself. If you enjoyed their Pizza, Hawaiian, and California Maki Twister, you can expect the same with Cheesy Bacon.

A combination of flavorful chicken strips, chopped bacon, and creamy cheese, wrapped in a warm flour tortilla, Cheesy Bacon Twister boast of its rich explosion of flavor in every bite. The creaminess of the cheese only intensifies the smoky flavor of the bacon without overpowering the taste of the tender chicken strips.

It is indeed one delightful treat that bacon and cheese lovers would surely enjoy.

Healthy Dining Experience at Sonya's Garden

If you have been reading my blog, you know for a fact that I am a hardcore carnivore. Although I love how healthy and nutritious fruits and vegetables are, I still cannot live without meat. Owing to the fact that healthy living is not just fad these days but is really good for our us, it wouldn’t hurt if we could savor the goodness of vegetarian meal once in a while. That’s what my foodie friend Glenn of The Strolling Spoon Foodblog did, from our recent visit at Sonya’s Garden in Alfonso, Cavite.

Sonya’s Garden Restaurant & Country Bed and Breakfast is one of Cavite’s hidden treasures. Known for its beautiful and relaxing ambiance, Sonya’s Garden offers Bed and Breakfast Accommodations, Garden Spa Services, and Free Art-Of-Doing-Nothing Lessons for their guests. Aside from their Country Store and Panaderia (Bakery), one should not miss the Eat All You Can that their Restaurant has to offer.

If you are a vegetarian or would just like to try to be one, their Eat All You Can Set Meal would be perfect for you. Everything that will be served is grown from their garden, so you can imagine the bursting of flavor and freshness of the dish once it hits your palates.

Upon entering the Sonya’s Garden dining area where it looked like you were eating inside a greenhouse, we were greeted by one of their attentive waiters and gave us a pitcher of their freshly made Dalandan Juice while we were seated. I am not a big fan of powder nor concentrated juice drink so, when I learned that it was made from freshly picked Dalandan Fruit, I didn’t mind having a second glass myself.

Their Green Salad Greens consist of freshly harvested lettuce and arugula, mango, broad beans, eggs, cucumber, melon, pineapple, and white local corn. Choices of salad toppings vary from time to time depending on whatever fruits in season. You can drizzle your salad with Sonya’s Secret Salad Dressing, or Balsamic vinegar/ extra virgin olive oil.

The cold weather was highlighted when we were served the hot and freshly baked whole wheat sesame bread. It was delightfully crunchy on the outside but soft in the inside. For a moment, I had this urged to hold the bread and placed it near my cheek to feel its warmth and to smell its delicious aroma. With selections of homemade dips and toppings such as basil pesto, white cheese, anchovies, bruschetta tomato toppings, mushroom pate, black olive tapenade, and fresh green peppercorn in olive oil, I could say, with that bread alone, I can fill my tummy and just be a happy camper. Of course, the servings of healthy food didn’t stop there.

We were also served with a bowl of fettuccini and two choices of sauces – sun dried tomato sauce and chicken cream with mango. You can grace your pasta with toppings of ratatouille, shitake mushroom, black olives, capers, and grated parmesan cheese.

As a meat lover myself, I know those are not too much for toppings, so when I saw that there is grilled salmon belly, I almost jump from my chair to rejoice. No meat, but fish will definitely do.

Glenn and I enthusiastically made our own pasta concoction, experimenting which will go best with each sauces.

Glenn and I were already full but we make it a point to leave an extra room for dessert. We were served sugar glazed sweet potato, banana rolls with sesame and jackfruit, and some homemade chocolate cake. Now here is the trick, the dessert may look like just an ordinary Filipino Dessert, but lo and behold, the magic is with the mint leaves silently seated alongside the condiments on the table. Just pop in a mint leave in your mouth then bite whichever dessert you want and it is heaven. The mint leaves made all the difference; it astounds me how the flavor burst into my mouth which gives that experience a whole new meaning.

Another thing worth mentioning is their Tarragon tea. I am a fan of Tea, I particularly love Japanese Cherry, Moroccan Mint, Chai, Chamomile, and Earl Grey. Having experienced Sonya’s Garden Tarragon Tea, I asked, “Tarragon, where have you been all my life?” Yes, it was that good. It has definitely steeled my resolved to cut on coffees and settle for teas instead.

The meal was a different experience, and for those who are not up to giving up their meal do not worry because Sonya’s offer a special order of Braised Chicken with Potatoes for 650php and Roast Chicken for 495php to go along with the set meal. But for us, we gave in to the challenge, and yes, we succeeded.

Their Eat All You Can Set Meal is 610php, it is a bit pricey if you compare it to the usual eat All You Can Fare wherein you can feast on both vegetables and meat, but then it’s the experience that counts. It’s around dinner time when we went there and although all the tables are pretty much occupied by their guests, the sense of serenity and calm still envelopes the room. Aside from the healthy food and beautiful ambiance, the waiters are friendly and accommodating, very prompt in catering to their guests’ needs.

I could say that although I still am not a convert vegan, and would still love to feast on steaks and other meat, the experience at Sonya’s Garden was a good one. The meal was healthy and the day was eventful, a break from my routine wherein I have nothing to think about but to enjoy the moment with my good friend. And I must say that sometimes, it is good to deviate from the usual to do something which is good for our body, soul, mind, and our heart.
